In this article, we’ll talk about what a crisis means and the different types of crises, along with examples of crises that might affect you or someone you love. 

What Is a Crisis?

There are different ways to define a crisis, depending on who you ask. 

When we’re talking about it in terms of mental health, a crisis is when you are so overwhelmed with emotions like fear or anxiety that your go-to coping mechanisms aren’t helping. Being in a state of crisis means that you’re so confused and afraid that you can’t make decisions or take action, and you may start to lose hope.

Here are a few other ways that experts have defined a crisis: 

  • “People are in a state of crisis when they face an obstacle to important life goals—an obstacle that is, for a time, insurmountable by the use of customary methods of problem-solving.” (Caplan, 1961)
  • “…an upset in equilibrium at the failure of one’s traditional problem-solving approach which results in disorganization, hopelessness, sadness, confusion, and panic.” (Lillibridge and Klukken, 1978)
  • “…crisis is a perception or experience of an event or situation as an intolerable difficulty that exceeds the person’s current resources and coping mechanisms.” (James and Gilliland, 2001)

Types of Crises

You might think of a crisis as a traumatic event like a car accident, natural disaster, or another calamity that seems to come out of nowhere and causes a great deal of suffering for the folks involved. These are common kinds of crises, but they’re not the only type.

Here are a few other types of crises: 

  • Developmental crises: This type of crisis is part of the process of growing up. Sometimes, a crisis is actually a predictable part of the cycle of life, like the crises that are described in Erikson’s stages of psychosocial development.
  • Existential crises: These types of inner conflicts that lead to a crisis are related to ideas like your life purpose, direction, and spirituality. A midlife crisis is an example of a crisis that is rooted in existential anxiety.
  • Situational crises: Sudden and unexpected crises include accidents and natural disasters. Getting in a car accident, being affected by a flood or an earthquake, or being the victim of a crime are a few examples of situational crises.

How Do You Know If You’re In a Crisis?

Losing your job, getting divorced, or being involved in an accident are more obvious kinds of crises. But sometimes, a crisis is less obvious and you might not pick up on the signs that you’re going through one until they become quite extreme.

Common signs of a mental health crisis include:

  • Changes in weight
  • Decreased performance at school or work
  • Dramatic shifts in sleep habits
  • Neglect of personal hygiene
  • Sudden changes in mood
  • Withdrawal from normal activities

What to Do If You’re In Crisis

If you realize that you’re in crisis, the first step is to reach out to your support network so you don’t have to try to navigate through it alone. 

While your family and friends are definitely part of your support network, a crisis can be a serious threat to your well-being, so you want to make sure that a professional is aware of what you’re going through. 

If you’re already working with a mental health provider, let them know what’s going on. If not, get in touch with your regular healthcare provider and ask if they can connect you with someone who can help you take care of your mental health.

There are also likely to be resources in your community like crisis centers and support groups that can be safe places to turn to for help. 

Ask “What Do I Need?” 

As much as you can, try to focus on what’s important at the moment. Being in a crisis can make your perspective wonky, and the confusion can even lead to memory issues. 

Ask yourself what you need right now. Are you in an unsafe situation that you need to get out of? Do you need to get some things off your plate so you can focus on dealing with the crisis at hand and making sure that you’re doing the basics of self-care to get through the day? 

What Is Crisis Counseling?

Crisis counseling is a short-term intervention that helps people in crisis access assistance, support, resources, and stabilization. It’s not the same thing as long-term psychotherapy—though that might be the next step to help someone recover from a crisis.

Take Care of Yourself 

Try to look for opportunities within a crisis situation to take away some stress. This might mean asking people to help you with something like chores or errands, asking for help at work or school, and using stress management techniques such as meditation or deep breathing.

The basics of self-care—so, eating enough, sleeping enough, and doing activities that help your body stay strong—make up a foundation you can stand on as you face a crisis. 

Look for ways to lessen your stress, whether it means asking other people to share your burdens or using stress management techniques such as meditation or deep breathing. Practice good self-care, each a healthy diet, and try to get plenty of sleep each night.

Helping Someone Through a Crisis

If a friend or loved one is going through a crisis, you can be there to offer practical and emotional support. 

Listening

Really listening to your loved one’s thoughts, fears, grief, or anxiety is one of the most supportive things you can do for them during a crisis.

Offer them support and encouragement but don’t give them unsolicited advice. Coming up with simplistic solutions can come off as judgmental or even patronizing to someone who is in the middle of a crisis. 

Just be present and open while your loved one shares how they’re feeling. Let them know that you are there for them.

Taking Care of Practical Stuff 

All the basic little things that make up a typical day can feel both impossible and pointless to someone who is going through a major crisis that is demanding all of their physical and mental energy. 

Helping a loved one with housework, grocery shopping, cooking, or errands can be an enormous help if they’re in crisis. Not only does it take things off their “to-do” list, but it also ensures that they have their basic needs and comforts taken care of. 

Help Them Access More Support

Encourage your loved one to reach out to a mental health professional for more support. If they’re so overwhelmed that they don’t even know where to start, you can step in and offer to drive them to a crisis center or look for a therapist in your community. 

Checking In With Yourself

When someone you love is in crisis, you may feel like you need to focus on their needs and well-being and put your own on the back burner. But ignoring your needs will make it harder for you to offer your loved one support—and you may even get burnt out.

When you acknowledge your needs and take steps to make sure they’re being met, you’re also leading by example. If your loved one is having a hard time accepting their own needs or has guilt about meeting them, seeing you practice self-care can make them feel like it’s “OK.” And if they’re at a loss about what to do, having you model helpful coping skills during a tough time can be informative and encouraging, too.

What Happens When We Feel Romantic Chemistry?

After any date, whether you’re recapping with friends or evaluating on your own, one question is almost always considered: Was there a spark?

This “spark”, or more generally, romantic chemistry, is the highly sought-after indication that a deeper connection has been forged. And while it’s safe to say that we can recognize romantic chemistry when we feel it, being able to describe it or name its components can be a bit trickier.

There’s more to it than first impressions, but with greater reliance on dating apps to seek romantic connections during the pandemic, sometimes a first impression is all you get. For many people, this has changed the perception of chemistry and how we recognize it.

What Is Chemistry?

Research has defined interpersonal chemistry as “perceived instant connection that exists when meeting a person for the first time.” The connection that’s felt between two people can indicate “they experience their interaction as something more than the sum of their separate contributions.”

A 2016 study on the subject refers to romantic love—the successor to romantic chemistry—as a natural, often positive addiction that evolved millions of years ago as a survival tactic to promote bonding and reproduction. When interacting with a person you’re attracted to, research shows that the body ups its production of dopamine, the pleasure neurotransmitter.

This might explain why the experience of having chemistry with someone can feel so good. Excitement meets craving more time spent with that person. Therapist and social worker Alisha Powell, PhD, LCSW, likens chemistry to a state of euphoria.

“There’s an exhilarating rush of powerlessness to control your feelings as you start to know the person better and feel more attracted to them as time passes,” Powell says. “You look forward to seeing the person and daydream about your favorite characteristics of them. You may feel very self conscious around them or find yourself doing things that you hope they’ll find endearing or attractive.”

Is Chemistry Only Physical Attraction?

Chemistry is born of several different factors like physical attraction, mental stimulation, shared values and interests. The list goes on.

But sexual attraction may be especially important, according to director of The Intimacy Institute Jenni Skyler, PhD, a sex therapist, sexologist and relationship and family therapist. She points to sexual attraction as “the door that opens romance.”

“Without it, most relationships won’t even get off the ground, let alone to a second date,” Skyler says. But of course, chemistry can change as a relationship evolves. Skyler says the chemistry of a new relationship will inevitably fade over time.

When things are not as shiny, new and mysterious, chemistry needs to be redefined… based on the couples’ perception of shared sexual beliefs, preferences, desires, and needs.

Because that initial physical or sexual chemistry can dwindle over time, many people require intellectual and emotional connection to achieve that inexplicable spark or “click.” This kind of authentic connection has greater lasting power, says dating and relationship expert Angela N. Holton.

“There are many people who are sapiosexuals, who build chemistry with romantic partners based on intellectual stimulation,” Holton says. “We can build chemistry by laughter and shared values, someone who speaks our love language and makes us feel seen, heard and understood.”

Chemistry in a Digital World

In any first-time interaction between two people, the type of relationship that will be pursued—no relationship, casual friendship, close friendship, or romantic relationship—is often determined in less than an hour, and it takes just five minutes to evaluate compatibility. First impressions aren’t everything, but a lot can ride on them when it comes to romantic chemistry.

First impressions carry a lot of weight on dating apps, as well. They can be make-or-break, even. And because these apps prioritize physical appearance as the initial foothold to romantic connection, the perception of chemistry has changed.

Dating apps can cause us to miss true connections and romantic chemistry because of a profile picture.

What We Lose in the Apps

“It’s hard to smell another person over an app,” Skyler says. “It’s hard to gauge their energy and body language. So much is lost without the face-to-face interaction.”

Swiping through a few photos and relatively shallow personality questions won’t give you the kind of information an in-person meeting would. Instead, users can determine whether or not someone is a suitable partner without really giving them a chance. Powell notes that relying too heavily on these “snap judgements” can often do us a disservice.

“Dating apps can cause us to miss true connections and romantic chemistry because of a profile picture,” she says. “While we may have a type, there’s a strong possibility that we could be attracted to someone who may not be our typical type after having a conversation and spending time with them.”

While dating apps are great tools for meeting many different types of people, the interactions often fail to provide a real representation of whether a connection is there or not. Conversations held on dating apps can create the illusion of chemistry, or lack thereof, Skyler says, based on our own projections.

“People are often disappointed to go on a face-to-face date and realize the chemistry they thought was there, based on the story they made up about this person, is not accurate,” she says.

Regardless of how you meet, it’s important to spend the time together that allows chemistry to unfold. In all its forms, chemistry is necessary for a lasting and fulfilling relationship, Holton says.

“Chemistry in communication, in growing together and in your values, sexual chemistry— which may not look exactly like it did in its initial stages—and emotional and mental chemistry,” she says. “No two relationships are the same. Each couple creates their own rules of engagement. I believe couples have to determine what aspects of chemistry are important to them both and be committed to nurturing them.”

Keep in Mind

While sexual chemistry is fun and flashy, more than just physical attraction factors into romantic chemistry on the whole. Emotional and intellectual chemistry is just as, if not more so, important for a long-lasting and fulfilling relationship.

Dependent and Independent Variables

Two of the most important variables you should learn about are an experiment’s independent and dependent variables.   • The independent variable is the variable that is manipulated by the experimenter. An example of an independent variable in psychology: In an experiment on the impact of sleep deprivation on test performance, sleep deprivation would be the independent variable. The experimenters would have some of the study participants be sleep-deprived while others would be fully rested.
  • The dependent variable is the variable that is measured by the experimenter. In the previous example, the scores on the test performance measure would be the dependent variable.

So, how do you differentiate between the independent and dependent variables? Start by asking yourself what the experimenter is manipulating.

The things that change, either naturally or through direct manipulation from the experimenter, are generally the independent variables. What is being measured? The dependent variable is the one that the experimenter is measuring.

Intervening Variables in Psychology

In the real world, variables often don’t stand alone. In many cases, factors affect the main variables of interest.

Intervening variables, also sometimes called intermediate or mediator variables, are factors that influence the relationship between two other variables. For example, sleep problems in university students are often influenced by factors such as stress.

As a result, stress might be an intervening variable that influences how much sleep people get, which in turn may influence how well they perform on exams.

Extraneous Variables in Psychology

Independent and dependent variables are not the only variables present in many experiments. In some cases, extraneous variables may also play a role.

This type of variable may impact the relationship between the independent and dependent variables.

For example, in our previous example of an experiment on the effects of sleep deprivation on test performance, other factors such as age, gender, and academic background may have an impact on the results. In such cases, the experimenter will note the values of these extraneous variables so any impact can be controlled for.

There are two basic types of extraneous variables:

  • Participant variables: These extraneous variables are related to the individual characteristics of each study participant that may impact how they respond. These factors can include background differences, mood, anxiety, intelligence, awareness, and other characteristics that are unique to each person.
  • Situational variables: These extraneous variables relate to things in the environment that may impact how each participant responds. For example, if a participant is taking a test in a chilly room, the temperature would be considered an extraneous variable. Some participants may not be affected by the cold, but others might be distracted or annoyed by the room’s temperature.

Other extraneous variables include the following:

  • Demand characteristics: Clues in the environment that suggest how a participant should behave
  • Experimenter effects: When a researcher unintentionally suggests clues for how a participant should behave

Controlled Variables in Psychology

In many cases, extraneous variables are controlled for by the experimenter. A controlled variable is one that is held constant throughout an experiment.

In the case of participant variables, the experiment might select participants that are the same in background and temperament to ensure that these factors don’t interfere with the results. Holding these variables constant is important for an experiment because it allows researchers to be sure that all other variables remain the same across all conditions.  

Using controlled variables means that when changes occur, the researchers can be sure that these changes are due to the manipulation of the independent variable and not caused by changes in other variables.

It is important to also note that a controlled variable is not the same thing as a control group. The control group in a study is the group of participants who do not receive the treatment or change in the independent variable.

All other variables between the control group and experimental group are held constant (i.e., they are controlled). The dependent variable being measured is then compared between the control group and experimental group to see what changes occurred because of the treatment.

Confounding Variables in Psychology

If a variable cannot be controlled for, it becomes what is known as a confounding variable. This type of variable can have an impact on the dependent variable, which can make it difficult to determine if the results are due to the influence of the independent variable, the confounding variable, or an interaction of the two.

Operationalizing Variables in Psychology

An operational definition describes how the variables are measured and defined in the study. Before conducting a psychology experiment, it is essential to create firm operational definitions for both the independent variable and dependent variables.

For example, in our imaginary experiment on the effects of sleep deprivation on test performance, we would need to create very specific operational definitions for our two variables. If our hypothesis is, “Students who are sleep deprived will score significantly lower on a test,” then we would have a few different concepts to define:

  • Students: First, what do we mean by “students?” In our example, let’s define students as participants enrolled in an introductory university-level psychology course.
  • Sleep deprivation: Next, we need to operationally define the “sleep deprivation” variable. In our example, let’s say that sleep deprivation refers to those participants who have had less than five hours of sleep the night before the test.
  • Test variable: Finally, we need to create an operational definition for the test variable. For this example, the test variable will be defined as a student’s score on a chapter exam in the introductory psychology course.

Once all the variables are operationalized, we’re ready to conduct the experiment.

Risk-Taking Examples and the Causes Behind Them


Risk-taking behavior refers to engaging in actions or activities that have the potential to be harmful or dangerous, increasing the risk of unintentional injuries and violence. This can include misusing alcohol, binge drinking, taking illicit substances, driving under the influence, or engaging in unprotected sex. 

Here we discuss the potential causes of risk-taking behaviors. We also explore several risk-taking examples that can harm a person’s health and well-being, along with providing a few tips for getting help.

Causes of Risk-Taking Behaviors

There are a number of reasons why people might engage in risky behaviors. Understanding these reasons can be helpful when it comes to addressing them.

Thrill-Seeking

Given that risk-taking behaviors are potentially dangerous, some people wonder why anyone would take part. On one hand, the behaviors put those individuals in harm’s way. On the other hand, they also give participants the chance to experience a thrill followed by emotions of relief or triumph.

Driving fast, for example, may lead to a car accident that harms the individual who is driving and others on the street. In the moment and directly after, however, it may bring about positive feelings from the thrill of a fast ride followed by relief in not getting caught by the police.

In some cases, people engage in risk-taking behaviors simply because they enjoy the adrenaline rush that comes with it. These people are often referred to as “thrill seekers” and might take risks even when there is no real benefit in doing so.

Social Influences

Risky behaviors can sometimes be a way to gain social approval or acceptance. Peer pressure, for example, can play a significant role in risk-taking behaviors. If someone sees their friends or peers doing risky things and wants to feel accepted by them, they might engage in those behaviors too.

This is particularly true during late adolescence when teens typically feel that conforming to their social group is important. With their friends’ influences, teens often engage in some amount of testing their abilities and exploring limits as they forge their own identities. This becomes problematic when it puts their health and well-being at risk.

Mental Health

Certain mental health conditions can contribute to risk-taking behaviors. For example, individuals with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are more likely to engage in risky behaviors because they tend to be more impulsive. People with bipolar disorder are also more likely to take risks during manic and hypomanic episodes.

Substance Abuse

Substance abuse is in and of itself a risky behavior, but using alcohol and other substances can also contribute to additional risk-taking. For example, research indicates that people with alcohol dependence engage in more high-risk behaviors, especially after bouts of heavy drinking, due to both impulsivity and sensation seeking.

Even when risk-takers engage in widely practiced behaviors, such as drinking or smoking cigarettes, they put their lives at risk as deaths associated with these behaviors are higher than deaths associated with illicit drug use. Still, risk-takers tend to ignore the consequences of their behaviors.

Who Engages in Risk-Taking Behaviors?

There are a number of factors that can make it more likely that people will engage in risky behavior. Here are some of the demographics with higher rates, according to research.

Young Adults

Age can play a role in how likely a person is to engage in risky behaviors. While these behaviors are present throughout the lifespan, young adults are more likely to engage in risk-taking behaviors than older adults.

Some studies have found that these behaviors are the most prevalent in 19 to 29-year-olds. Others suggest that risk-taking behaviors peak in the teen years and decline with age, as people become more risk-averse.

The brain is still developing and maturing in the early years of life. As a result, teens and young adults are often more impulsive, more likely to take risks, and less likely to consider the consequences.

Males

A person’s biological sex may also have an impact on whether they engage in risk-taking behavior. Some research indicates that males are more likely to be risk-takers than females. This difference may be due to having higher levels of testosterone.

Although the hormone estradiol—which is higher in females—has also been associated with taking greater risks, as has higher cortisol levels, which is often referred to as the “stress hormone.”

Social factors, like the pressure to conform to gender norms, can also play a role. For example, males might feel pressure to take risks to appear “masculine” while females might feel pressure to avoid risk-taking to appear “feminine.”

People With Certain Genes

Genetics appear to play a role in risk-taking behaviors as well. Some researchers have identified certain genes that tend to be more present in individuals who engage in risky behaviors.

Other studies have made this connection by studying the genes of twins. According to one piece of research, financial risk-taking was determined to be roughly 29% inherited while safety-related risk-taking had a 55% heritability rate.

Impulsive and Adventurous Personalities

Certain personality traits may also influence risk-taking behaviors. For example, people who are more impulsive, sensation-seeking, or adventurous are more likely to take risks. Additionally, if a person’s Big 5 personality traits change, their level of engagement in risky behaviors tends to change as well.

Individuals With Mental Health Conditions

Certain mental health conditions may also contribute to an increased risk for risk-taking. One is post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). A study of 234 military veterans with PTSD and mild traumatic brain injury found that these individuals were more likely to engage in risk-taking behavior, especially when in a negative state.

According to the study, this is due in part to veterans with PTSD often being more impulsive. They also tend to be more sensation-seeking, feel a sense of invincibility, and are prone to a higher level of boredom.

Getting Help for Risky Behaviors

If we find ourselves engaging in risky behaviors such as drug abuse, unprotected sex, or gambling, it’s time to get help. Risk-taking behavior can cause us physical harm, such as by contracting a sexually transmitted infection, or lead to financial losses that we can’t recover from without some heavy lifting. 

Working with a psychotherapist can help address the underlying causes that might be contributing to risk-taking behaviors. Support groups can provide access to others who are going through similar experiences.

Social support is also important. Consider confiding in a close friend or family member who can reinforce accountability when the urge to engage in risky behaviors strikes.

The Elaboration Likelihood Model of Persuasion Explained

The Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM) is a dual-process, or two-fold, model of persuasion that describes how people manage information. It was originated by Richard E. Petty and John T. Cacioppo in the 1980s.

The ELM suggests there are two routes to persuasion.

First is the central route, which involves the motivated processing and evaluation of messages, or the peripheral route, which involves more superficial aspects of the message. The central route involves thinking about the merits of the argument and weighing the pros and cons. Persuasion via the central route leads to long-lasting change.

Second it the peripheral route, which involves other elements of the argument, such as how attractive the speaker is or their success at articulating the message, not the merits of the argument itself.

Two Routes to Change Someone’s Mind

Though the two routes to persuasion suggest there are only two ways to evaluate a message, the theory incorporates the notion of elaboration likelihood, or the likelihood that message receivers are to elaborate on a message. As a result, message receivers actually move along an elaboration continuum from expending considerable effort elaborating on a message to expending no effort on elaboration.

A person may occupy various points in between the two ends of the spectrum, however.. In other words, people may occupy the central route or the peripheral route exclusively, but may also be somewhere in the middle, where the two are combined.

The Central Route to Persuasion

The central route to persuasion is used when elaboration is high. When we think about the merits of an argument, focus on the logic and quality of what’s being said, and carefully weigh the pros and cons of an argument we are persuaded through the central route. This route, according to Avigail Lev, PsyD, founder and director of the Bay Area CBT Center, “involves deep thinking and understanding of the argument.”

This route is used when motivation and ability are high. When people are persuaded through the central route, attitudes are particularly strong.

The Peripheral Route to Persuasion

The peripheral route to persuasion is used when elaboration is low. As elaboration gets lower, we’re more likely to use peripheral cues, such as rules of thumb or the way something looks, in the persuasion process.

That is, we’re influenced by cues “that don’t really have much to do with the argument itself,” says Lev, “like how attractive the speaker is or how confidently they speak, rather than what they’re actually saying.” This creates attitude change that tends not to last.

For example, if we’re persuaded to buy a cosmetic product because the spokesperson is attractive, not because of the information the spokesperson provides, we’ve been persuaded by the peripheral route and are likely to change cosmetics when a better product comes along.

This route may not seem as good as the central route, however it exists for a valuable reason: it would be impossible to carefully think through every decision that presents itself to us. Not every decision is equally important, and using the peripheral route for decisions that aren’t as important frees up mental space for when a decision must be considered more carefully.

Real-World Examples and Applications of the ELM

During the COVID-19 pandemic, health officials and pundits used a variety of tactics to persuade people to, for instance, wear masks consistently. When health officials used appeals that matched the individual’s values—and those values are important to the individual—they would wear a mask. An example of this might be appealing to the desire to protect vulnerable children or elderly relatives.

However, when using appeals that don’t match the individual’s values, that person would be unlikely to wear a mask. An example of this might be insisting that wearing a mask is actually fashionable.

Both of these instances involve persuasion via the central route and therefore were more likely to be enduring.

If, however, the values health officials argue for are unimportant to the individual, they may wear a mask but their willingness to do so may not last long. Because this uses the peripheral route, one’s attitude may be easily persuaded to be against masking if the individual hears another, better argument.

While there is a reason for the peripheral route of persuasion, today there is so much information, we’re picking the peripheral route more and more. “In today’s world,” argues Lev, “with social media, pundits, and a lot of division in the country, it’s getting harder and harder to take that central route.”

We’re bombarded with so much information from all sides and this overwhelming amount of different information can actually condition us to be more easily swayed by the peripheral route.

Criticisms and Limitations of the Model

There are several criticisms and limitations of the ELM. First the descriptive nature of the model has been critiqued, especially for not clearly articulating its hypothesized processes. This lack of a clear and consistent framework make it very difficult to test and falsify the ELM.

Second, since its introduction in 1983, the elaboration continuum, which claims that the central route and the peripheral route are two sides in a continuum of elaboration, hasn’t undergone comprehensive testing.

The majority of studies test elaboration likelihood under three separate conditions: low, moderate, and high. However, there are no studies that account for the entire continuum.

Third, the dual-path nature of the model has been an issue since the ELM was first introduced. Specifically, the fact that central and peripheral processing does not appear to take place at the same time in the ELM has led to criticisms and the introduction of other models that account for both routes being used simultaneously.

Finally, mediating variables in the ELM remain an issue. For instance, the variable of affect has been shown to be used in both the central and peripheral route, yet much research still views affect as solely the domain of the peripheral route.

Do Genes and Your Environment Influence Intelligence?

What role do genetic and environmental influences play in determining intelligence? This question has been one of the most controversial topics throughout the history of psychology and remains a hot topic of debate to this day.

In addition to disagreements about the basic nature of intelligence, psychologists have spent a great amount of time and energy debating the various influences on individual intelligence. The debate focuses on one of the major questions in psychology: Which is more important—nature or nurture?

Do Genetics or Intelligence Play a Bigger Role in Determining Intelligence?

Today, psychologists recognize that both genetics and the environment play a role in determining intelligence.

It now becomes a matter of determining exactly how much of an influence each factor has.

Twin studies suggest that the variance in IQ is linked to genetics. This research suggests that genetics may play a larger role than environmental factors in determining individual IQ.

One important thing to note about the genetics of intelligence is that it is not controlled by a single “intelligence gene.” Instead, it is the result of complex interactions between many genes (or polygenic). Next, it is important to note that genetics and the environment interact to determine exactly how inherited genes are expressed, a concept known as epigenetics.

For example, if a person has tall parents, it is likely that the individual will also grow to be tall. However, the exact height the person reaches can be influenced by environmental factors such as nutrition and disease.

A child may be born with genes for exceptional brightness, but if that child grows up in a deprived environment where they are malnourished and lack access to educational opportunities, they may not score well on measures of IQ.

Evidence of Genetic Influences on Intelligence

All traits are heritable, with intelligence being one of the most researched. If genetics were the only factor to consider when predicting intelligence, we would expect identical twins to have identical IQ scores. The research shows:

  • Studies show that IQ scores of identical twins are strongly correlated, and are more similar than those of fraternal twins. Identical twins’ test scores also correlate highly when given assessments that measure reading, mathematics, and language skills.
  • Siblings who were raised together in the same environment have more similar IQs than those of unrelated adopted children who were brought up in the same household.

In addition to inherited characteristics, other biological factors such as maternal age, prenatal exposure to harmful substances, and prenatal malnutrition may also influence intelligence.

Evidence of Environmental Influences on Intelligence

Historically, some theorists believed humans are born with a blank slate, and capable of becoming any type of person with any type of career, influence, and social status. The research shows:

  • Identical twins who were raised separately have less similar IQs than those of identical twins who grew up in the same household.
  • School attendance has an impact on IQ scores.
  • Children who were breastfed for 12 months or longer had a higher IQ (about 3.7 points) at age 30.
  • Vitamin and nutrient deficiencies are linked with lower IQ.

In one example, studies have found that first-born children tend to have higher IQs than later-born siblings. Why? Many experts believe that this is because first-born children receive more attention from their parents. Research also suggests that parents expect older children to perform better on a variety of tasks, whereas later-born siblings face less task-focused expectations.

EtG Test for Confirming Alcohol Abstinence


The ethyl glucuronide (EtG) test is widely used to detect the presence in the urine of ethyl glucuronide. EtG is a breakdown product of ethanol, the intoxicating agent in alcohol. The test can also screen for EtG in the blood, hair, and nails, but the urine test is the most widely used. The main purpose of the EtG test is to document​ alcohol abstinence.

EtG Test Uses

The EtG test is used to detect alcohol abstinence in situations that do not allow drinking. These may include:

  • Alcohol treatment programs
  • Court cases (for example, child custody)
  • DUI or DWI programs
  • Liver transplant patients
  • Probation programs
  • Professional monitoring programs (for example, airline pilots, healthcare professionals, attorneys)
  • Schools or the military

One of the primary benefits of an EtG test, compared to blood or breath alcohol tests, is that EtG can be detected longer in the urine than in blood or breath.

It’s important to note that the EtG test is not recommended for workplace testing programs as it does not measure current impairment from alcohol.

Detection Time Frame

The EtG test strips are quite sensitive and can detect even low levels of EtG in the urine. (Remember, the test measures EtG specifically—not alcohol.) The test can confirm that there has been alcohol in the body up to five days after consumption.

In studies of participants without alcohol use disorders, EtG has been detected in urine samples for up to 80 hours (3.3 days) after heavy alcohol exposure.

EtG Test Accuracy

There are some limitations to this test. The EtG test strips can produce a positive result from exposure to the alcohol that’s present in many daily use products. Environmental or home products that contain alcohol include:

  • Aftershave
  • Breath sprays
  • Cleaning products
  • Cosmetics
  • Foods prepared with or flavored with alcohol
  • Hair dye
  • Hand sanitizers
  • Hygiene products like antiperspirant
  • Mouthwashes

There are hundreds of household products that contain ethanol, according to the Consumer Product Information Database, and exposure to them could possibly lead to a false positive on the EtG test.

But the EtG test strips accurately detect when a person has recently consumed alcohol 70% or more of the time. One study showed that for moderate to heavy drinking, this number jumps to 85%.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) lists EtG as a test that can help rule in or rule out whether someone has been drinking with high accuracy.

EtG Test Results

The following cutoff values have been proposed for test results.

High Positive

A “high” positive EtG test (for example, >1,000ng/mL) may indicate:

  • Heavy drinking on the same day or the previous day
  • Light drinking on the same day as the test

Low Positive

A “low” positive EtG test (for example, 500 to 1,000ng/mL) may indicate:

  • Heavy drinking within the last one to three days
  • Light drinking within the last 24 hours
  • Recent intense exposure to environmental products containing alcohol (within the last 24 hours)

Very Low Positive

“Very low” positive EtG test (for example, 100 to 500 ng/mL) may indicate:

  • Heavy drinking within the last one to three days
  • Light drinking within the last 12 to 36 hours
  • Recent exposure to environmental products containing alcohol

A 2015 study suggested that a 100 ng/mL cutoff was likely to detect heavy drinking in the previous five days and any drinking in the last two days. A cutoff greater than or equal to 500 ng/mL was likely to only detect heavy drinking during the previous day.

How EtG Is Eliminated From the Body

EtG is eliminated from the body over time after you drink water and other fluids that flush it out when you urinate. Although drinking water does help flush EtG out of your system, it’s a myth that you can use this method to reliably manipulate drug test results.

While you may try drinking a lot of water to flush EtG out of your system in the days leading up to a drug test, you should know that this is not always effective. Laboratories may detect any tampering with urine samples.

Research has suggested that by measuring urinary creatinine (a chemical compound and waste product of urine), health professionals can identify when a urine sample has been diluted or when someone tried to disguise their EtG levels by drinking a lot of water.

It’s also a myth that one drink won’t show up on the EtG test. Whether the test detects one drink depends on many factors, like how recently you drank, your metabolism, and the alcohol percentage of your drink. But if you drank any alcohol in the past five days, there is a high chance the EtG test will detect it.

Remember, EtG tests don’t measure the number of drinks you had. Its job is to indicate whether you’ve had any alcohol at all—not the specific amount.

The only way to ensure you pass an EtG test is to abstain from alcohol consumption.
