Cleansing your mind and body means taking intentional steps to reduce stress, reset your habits, and support your overall wellness. 1. Do a Digital Detox

There are a number of benefits to doing a digital detox or taking a break from technology. If you’re always on your smartphone, a detox can help improve your mental well-being. Stepping away from electronic devices can also reduce stress, making it good for your body as well.

Start small by leaving all devices in the house while enjoying some time outside. Once you’re ready, try switching off your television, computer, cellphone, and other electronics for an entire day. This can stop the urge to check or interact with the device out of habit. Even a brief break can be refreshing.

A few additional tech-free activities that can also help purify and cleanse you physically, mentally, and spiritually include:

  • Attend a yoga class
  • Do a few stretches on your living room floor
  • Find a quiet place to sit and engage in mindfulness meditation
  • Go for a walk in the park
  • Practice deep breathing exercises
  • Take a nice warm bath, maybe with some light music playing in the background

2. Try Tongue Scraping

In Ayurveda—a form of alternative medicine practiced in India—the coating on the tongue is called “ama” and reflects metabolic debris. Using a tongue scraper to get rid of this coating or debris reduces bacteria in the mouth, which helps to improve oral health.

Oral health is important for the body and the mind. A healthy mouth improves one’s ability to speak and smile, even making it easier to express emotions with various facial expressions.

Start your day by gently scraping your tongue (don’t worry—it doesn’t hurt!). Tongue scrapers can be purchased for a few dollars at a drug or health food store.

3. Dry Brush Your Body

Dry brushing, also called garshana, is another technique used in Ayurvedic medicine that offers cleansing benefits. It works by stimulating the lymphatic system. This system is important for immunity, protecting us from infection and disease.

All you need is a body brush, which you use to brush your skin gently. Your skin should be dry; you don’t need to bathe or shower beforehand. Start with your upper body and work your way down, being careful not to scrub too hard to avoid irritating your skin.

Once you are done, shower or bathe as normal, then apply lotion or body oil to moisturize your skin. Dry brushing is a fast and inexpensive way to feel refreshed and renewed.

4. Take a Contrast Shower

Another way to rejuvenate your body and mind is by taking a contrast shower. Contrast therapy is a technique that involves alternating between hot and cold water. Some alternative practitioners recommend this practice as a way to boost circulation and improve your energy.

To do this technique at home:

  • Turn on your shower and set the water temperature as warm as you can handle. The temperature should be hot but not unbearable or scalding. Use caution (and common sense) to avoid burning yourself or damaging your skin.
  • After standing in the warm/hot water for two to three minutes, switch the temperature to as cold as you can handle. The cold water will be uncomfortable, but you may also find it invigorating. Stand in the cold water for one minute before switching back to hot water.
  • Repeat this cycle two to three times.

5. Write Your Troubles Away

When cleansing your body and mind, it’s also helpful to let go of the thoughts and emotions that you have unconsciously blocked from coming to the surface. Repressing emotions has both mental and physical consequences, such as increasing your risk of depression and raising the likelihood that you will develop a cardiac abnormality.

Start a personal ritual to begin recognizing these feelings and then letting them go.

  • Write a letter (without sending it): One option is to write a letter to someone who has hurt you or let you down, using the letter to explain how their actions make you feel. You don’t have to send it! The point is simply to gain a better understanding of emotions you may have unconsciously suppressed, letting them escape from your body so they can’t continue to harm you.
  • Write in a journal: Another option is to use a journal to give yourself a regular outlet for all your emotions, regrets, and worries. Seek to understand how you feel and, instead of trying to push these emotions away, harness them and use them to move forward in this world as a more emotionally intelligent person.

Why Is It Important to Cleanse Yourself?

Cleansing yourself regularly serves many purposes

  • One is that it helps eliminate potentially harmful substances or thoughts from your body and mind. This can make you feel better mentally and physically by removing things that may be slowing you down.
  • Cleansing yourself also leaves more space for positive things in your life. When you can get rid of your negative thoughts and emotions, for instance, it’s like cleaning out your closets. There’s now room for things that would be more beneficial in your life, including things that are more positive and uplifting.
  • Regular cleansing helps your body and mind recoup, recharge, and return to their normal functions stronger than ever. It’s a way to feel energized and purified physically, mentally, and spiritually.

What About a Dietary Cleanse?

While following a healthy diet filled with a range of nutritious foods is a good idea, dietary cleanses and detoxes are not recommended. There is no research showing that these practices improve health. They also don’t remove toxins (your liver, kidney, and skin already do that). For people with certain medical conditions, these detox practices can actually be harmful or even dangerous.

5 Key Components of Classical Conditioning

  1. Unconditioned stimulus: An unconditioned stimulus is a stimulus or trigger that leads to an automatic response. If a cold breeze makes you shiver, for instance, it is an unconditioned stimulus; it produces an involuntary response (the shivering).
  2. Neutral stimulus: A neutral stimulus is a stimulus that doesn’t initially trigger a response on its own. If you hear the sound of a fan but don’t feel the breeze, for example, it wouldn’t necessarily trigger a response. That would make it a neutral stimulus.
  3. Conditioned stimulus: A conditioned stimulus is a once-neutral stimulus (that didn’t trigger a response) but now leads to a response. If you previously ignored dogs, but then got bit by one, and now you feel fear every time you see a dog, the dog has become a conditioned stimulus.
  4. Unconditioned response: An unconditioned response is an automatic response or a response that occurs without thought when an unconditioned stimulus is present. If you smell your favorite food and your mouth starts watering, the watering is an unconditioned response.
  5. Conditioned response: A conditioned response is a learned response or a response that is created where no response existed before. Returning to the example of being bitten by a dog, the fear you experience after the bite is a conditioned response.

How Classical Conditioning Works

Classical conditioning involves forming an association between two stimuli, resulting in a learned response. There are three basic phases of this process.

Phase 1: Before Conditioning

The first part of the classical conditioning process requires a naturally occurring stimulus that will automatically elicit a response. Salivating in response to the smell of food is a good example of a naturally occurring stimulus.

During this phase of the process, the unconditioned stimulus (UCS) results in an unconditioned response (UCR). Presenting food (the UCS) naturally and automatically triggers a salivation response (the UCR).

At this point, there is also a neutral stimulus that produces no effect—yet. It isn’t until the neutral stimulus is paired with the UCS that it will come to evoke a response.

Let’s take a closer look at the two critical components of this phase of classical conditioning:

  • The unconditioned stimulus is one that unconditionally, naturally, and automatically triggers a response. For example, when you smell one of your favorite foods, you may immediately feel hungry. In this example, the smell of the food is the unconditioned stimulus.
  • The unconditioned response is the unlearned response that occurs naturally in response to the unconditioned stimulus. In our example, the feeling of hunger in response to the smell of food is the unconditioned response.

In the before conditioning phase, an unconditioned stimulus is paired with an unconditioned response. A neutral stimulus is then introduced.

Phase 2: During Conditioning

During the second phase of the classical conditioning process, the previously neutral stimulus is repeatedly paired with the unconditioned stimulus. As a result of this pairing, an association between the previously neutral stimulus and the UCS is formed.

At this point, the once neutral stimulus becomes known as the conditioned stimulus (CS). The subject has now been conditioned to respond to this stimulus. The conditioned stimulus is a previously neutral stimulus that, after becoming associated with the unconditioned stimulus, eventually comes to trigger a conditioned response.

In our earlier example, suppose that when you smelled your favorite food, you also heard the sound of a whistle. While the whistle is unrelated to the smell of the food, if the sound of the whistle was paired multiple times with the smell, the whistle sound would eventually trigger the conditioned response. In this case, the sound of the whistle is the conditioned stimulus.

The during conditioning phase involves repeatedly pairing a neutral stimulus with an unconditioned stimulus. Eventually, the neutral stimulus becomes the conditioned stimulus.

Phase 3: After Conditioning

Once the association has been made between the UCS and the CS, presenting the conditioned stimulus alone will come to evoke a response—even without the unconditioned stimulus. The resulting response is known as the conditioned response (CR).

The conditioned response is the learned response to the previously neutral stimulus. In our example, the conditioned response would be feeling hungry when you heard the sound of the whistle.

In the after conditioning phase, the conditioned stimulus alone triggers the conditioned response.

Key Concepts That Shape How We Learn

Behaviorists have described a number of different phenomena associated with classical conditioning. Some of these elements involve the initial establishment of the response while others describe the disappearance of a response. Here are ways these elements are involved in learning.

Acquisition

Acquisition is the initial stage of learning, when a response is first established and gradually strengthened. During the acquisition phase of classical conditioning, a neutral stimulus is repeatedly paired with an unconditioned stimulus.

As you may recall, an unconditioned stimulus is something that naturally and automatically triggers a response without any learning. After an association is made, the subject will begin to emit a behavior in response to the previously neutral stimulus, which is now known as a conditioned stimulus. It is at this point that we can say that the response has been acquired.

Once the response has been established, you can gradually reinforce the response to make sure the behavior is well learned.

Extinction

Extinction is when the occurrences of a conditioned response decrease or disappear. In classical conditioning, this happens when a conditioned stimulus is no longer paired with an unconditioned stimulus.

For example, if the smell of food (the unconditioned stimulus) had been paired with the sound of a whistle (the conditioned stimulus), the sound of the whistle would eventually come to evoke the conditioned response of hunger.

However, if the smell of food were no longer paired with the whistle, eventually the conditioned response (hunger) would disappear.

Spontaneous Recovery

Sometimes a learned response can suddenly reemerge, even after a period of extinction. This is called spontaneous recovery.

For example, imagine that after training a dog to salivate to the sound of a bell, you stop reinforcing the behavior, and the response becomes extinct. After a rest period during which the conditioned stimulus is not presented, you ring the bell, and the animal spontaneously recovers the previously learned response.

If the conditioned stimulus and unconditioned stimulus are no longer associated, extinction will return very rapidly after a spontaneous recovery.

Stimulus Generalization

Stimulus generalization is the tendency for a conditioned stimulus to evoke similar responses after the response has been conditioned. For example, if a dog has been conditioned to salivate at the sound of a bell, the animal may also exhibit the same response to a sound that’s similar to the bell.

In John B. Watson’s famous Little Albert Experiment, for example, a small child was conditioned to fear a white rat. The child demonstrated stimulus generalization by also exhibiting fear in response to other fuzzy white objects, including stuffed toys and Watson’s own hair.

Discrimination

Stimulus discrimination is the ability to differentiate between a conditioned stimulus and other stimuli not paired with an unconditioned stimulus.

For example, if a bell tone were the conditioned stimulus, discrimination would involve being able to tell the difference between the bell tone and other similar sounds. Because the subject is able to distinguish between these stimuli, they will only respond when the conditioned stimulus is presented.

Where You Might See Examples of Classical Conditioning

It can be helpful to look at a few examples of how the classical conditioning process operates both in experimental and real-world settings.

Fear Response

John B. Watson’s experiment with Little Albert is an example of the fear response. The child initially showed no fear of a white rat, but after the rat was paired repeatedly with loud, scary sounds, the child began to cry when the rat was present.

Prior to the conditioning, the white rat was a neutral stimulus. The unconditioned stimulus was the loud, clanging sounds, and the unconditioned response was the fear response created by the noise.

By repeatedly pairing the rat with the unconditioned stimulus, the white rat (now the conditioned stimulus) came to evoke the fear response (now the conditioned response).

This experiment illustrates how phobias can form through classical conditioning. In many cases, a single pairing of a neutral stimulus (a dog, for example) and a frightening experience (being bitten by the dog) can lead to a lasting phobia (being afraid of dogs).

Taste Aversions

Another example of classical conditioning is the development of conditioned taste aversions. Researchers John Garcia and Bob Koelling first noticed this phenomenon when they observed how rats that had been exposed to nausea-causing radiation developed an aversion to flavored water after the radiation and water were presented together.

In this example, the radiation represents the unconditioned stimulus and nausea represents the unconditioned response. After the pairing of the two, the flavored water is the conditioned stimulus, while nausea that formed when exposed to the water alone is the conditioned response.

Later research demonstrated that such classically conditioned aversions could be produced through a single pairing of the conditioned stimulus and the unconditioned stimulus.

Researchers also found that such aversions can even develop if the conditioned stimulus (the taste of the food) is presented several hours before the unconditioned stimulus (the nausea-causing stimulus).

Why do such associations develop so quickly? Forming such associations can have survival benefits. If an animal eats something that makes it ill, it needs to avoid eating the same food in the future to avoid sickness or even death.

This is an example of biological preparedness. Some associations form more readily because they aid in survival.

In one famous field study, researchers injected sheep carcasses with a poison that would make coyotes sick but not kill them. The goal was to help sheep ranchers reduce the number of sheep lost to coyote killings.

Not only did the experiment work by lowering the number of sheep killed, it also caused some of the coyotes to develop such a strong aversion to sheep that they would actually run away at the scent or sight of a sheep.

Organizational Behavior

Classical conditioning can also have applications in business and marketing. For example, it can be used to help people form favorable attitudes toward products, businesses, or brands.

While there may not be a direct link between the item and the consumer response, creating this association may help motivate people to purchase certain products because they have developed a favorable opinion of them due to classical conditioning.

Classical vs. Operant Conditioning

  • Operant conditioning is a learning method in which a specific behavior is associated with either a positive or negative consequence. This form of learning links voluntary actions with receiving either a reward or punishment, often to strengthen or weaken those voluntary behaviors.
  • Classical conditioning is a learning process focused more on involuntary behaviors. It uses associations with neutral stimuli to evoke a specific involuntary response.

Pitfalls to Watch For

Some psychologists maintain that classical conditioning represents a reductive, mechanical explanation for some behaviors. Some other criticisms of classical conditioning center on the fact that:

  • Classical conditioning does not take human individuality and free will into account.
  • It generally does not predict human behavior; people can form associations but still not act upon them.
  • Many different factors can impact the associations and outcomes.
  • People can choose not to act on the associations they have made through classical conditioning.

People do not respond exactly like Pavlov’s dogs. However, classical conditioning has numerous real-world applications. For example:

  • Animal training: Animal trainers, including dog trainers, use classical conditioning to help people train their pets.
  • Therapy: These techniques are also useful for helping people cope with phobias or anxiety problems. Therapists might, for example, repeatedly pair something that provokes anxiety with relaxation techniques in order to create an association.
  • Education: Teachers can apply classical conditioning in the class by creating a positive classroom environment to help students overcome anxiety or fear. Pairing an anxiety-provoking situation, such as performing in front of a group, with pleasant surroundings helps the student learn new associations.

Historical Background

Ivan Pavlov discovered classical conditioning. Pavlov was passionate about physiology, even earning gold medals for his work in this field. As director of a physiological laboratory, he began to connect physiological research with reflex response and regulation.

Although a psychologist did not discover classical conditioning, it has had a tremendous influence over the school of thought in psychology known as behaviorism. Behaviorism assumes that all learning occurs through interactions with the environment and that the environment shapes behavior.

Today, behavioral therapies use the principles of classical conditioning to help people change negative behaviors. The thought behind these therapies is that we learn from our environment. Cognitive behavioral therapy and exposure therapy are two types of behavioral therapy.

A compulsive liar is someone who habitually tells lies, even without a clear motive or in situations where telling the truth would be more beneficial. We all tell lies occasionally. The average person tells two lies a day. However, some people tell several lies a day to cope with various social situations.

We asked the experts how to deal with compulsive liars, and they recommended encouraging the person to get professional help, while also setting boundaries in your relationship with them to protect yourself.

How to Tell if Someone Is a Compulsive Liar

Aimee Daramus, PsyD, a licensed clinical psychologist, says compulsive liars have little control over their tendency to use lying as a coping skill. “They may lie to manage social situations or meet their own psychological needs of safety, security, or belonging.”

For instance, a compulsive liar may tell a quick lie to avoid discomfort or make up something to make them seem more desirable, says Sabrina Romanoff, PsyD, a clinical psychologist and professor at Yeshiva University. “There are usually themes in their lies, such as: they are heroic, they have a lot of accomplishments, or they are deserving of sympathy.”

These are some of the signs that someone is lying, according to Dr. Romanoff:

  • Telling stories with extensive details to make them seem more real
  • Appearing anxious while speaking
  • Frequently changing their story
  • Saying one thing but doing another
  • Being vague when questioned
  • Becoming defensive when confronted with inconsistencies in their story

Sometimes, it can be difficult to tell when someone is lying, and you just have to wait and see whether their words are proven to be untrue, says Dr. Daramus. “If you know them well, you may recognize a tone of voice or body posture that tells you they’re lying, but many times you just have to wait it out.”

Why Some People Can’t Stop Lying

Some people lie compulsively out of habit, whereas others do it due to a mental health disorder.

Mental Health Conditions

According to Dr. Daramus, people who lie compulsively may do so because they have a mental health condition such as:

However, it’s important to note that everyone who lies compulsively doesn’t necessarily have a mental health condition, and everyone who has these mental health conditions isn’t necessarily a compulsive liar.

Lying as a Coping Skill

Many people who lie compulsively use it as a coping skill, because it protected them or solved a problem, perhaps when they were very young, says Dr. Daramus. “So, if someone is a compulsive liar, they’ve probably had to handle some tough situations where lying helped them cope or kept them safe.”

A 2016 study notes that the brain gets accustomed to dishonesty. The researchers studied participants’ brains to see what happens when they lie and found that the more someone lies, the easier it becomes for them to tell bigger, more frequent lies.

What to Do When Someone Keeps Lying to You

Don’t Take It Personally

When you realize someone is lying to you, you may find yourself wondering what you did wrong or whether your behavior has anything to do with it.

However, it’s important to avoid taking the person’s lies personally and remember that their compulsion to lie reflects more on them than it does on you, says Dr. Romanoff. 

Explain How Their Lies Are Affecting You

If you do catch the person in a lie, try not to get frustrated and get into a back and forth of pulling for the truth, says Dr. Romanoff.

Instead, talk to them and let them know how their lies are affecting you. For example, you could say:

  • “I was angry and upset when I found out you lied to me.”
  • “If you lie to me, it’s difficult for me to rely on you to get this done.”
  • “It’s hard for me to trust that you’re telling me the truth now.”

Encourage Them to Get Help

Encourage the person to see a mental healthcare provider who can help them understand why they’re lying, diagnose whether they have an underlying mental disorder, and help them develop healthier coping mechanisms.

You can make your connection with them contingent on their getting therapy with a trained professional, says Dr. Daramus.

Set Boundaries With Them

Dr. Daramus recommends setting boundaries with the person to protect yourself. Depending on your relationship with the person, you could say:

  • “I don’t want our relationship to be based on lies. I can only be your friend/partner if you tell me the truth.”
  • “I will have to terminate your employment if I find out you’ve lied to me again.”

Although if the person’s compulsion to lie is strong, the boundary may not be effective, and you may find that they’re continuing to lie to you, despite the threat that you’ll walk away from the relationship, says Dr. Daramus.

Pathological Liar vs. Compulsive Liar

Lying pathologically is not quite the same as lying compulsively. Below, Dr. Romanoff explains the difference between pathological liars and compulsive liars:

Compulsive Liars

  • Typically lies in low-stakes situations

  • Motivated by a need to manage social impressions

  • Lies may seem unnecessary or irrational

Pathological Liars
